Achieving your New Year’s resolutions!
First of all, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope you all had a great holiday.
January is almost over and finally you are getting settled back into your daily routines again. The holidays are over and work and school for the children is starting back up. This is the time to forget the New Year’s resolutions you’ve made after reflecting on the last year. What were your goals for 2008? Like most people was it to lose weight, spend more time with loved ones, eat healthier, quit smoking, do more sports or earn more money? And like most people, did January 1st come and go and nothing has changed? Maybe now is the time to reflect again. 2008 has only started and you can sit down and think about what you want to achieve this year.
In order to get or achieve anything, you need to have a clear vision of what it is that you want. Because then you get so exited about it, and start to do everything to make it possible.
And helping you to make it happen and to visualize will be a mind map, a wish board, a goal plan or whatever else you want to call it. This will be a personalized collage featuring meaningful cut outs from newspapers, magazines, pictures, inspiring quotes or anything that will reflect your goals.
1. Put your goals on paper!
To get started, sit down just for a few minutes, and write down everything that comes into your head that you want to do or get or achieve during 2008. Don’t be shy; put it all out there on a piece of paper. Want to look like a supermodel? Done! Want to earn more money to take a nice holiday? Done! Want to move to a new place? Done! Write down everything you can think of!
2. Make your goals more concrete!
When your list is done, go through every goal and try to make it more concrete. How much weight do you want to lose? How much money do you want to earn? Where do you want to go on holiday?
3. Choose cut outs that represent your goals!
Start to flip through old magazines, newspapers or go shopping and look for great handicraft things that reflect your goals. Cut out everything and organize it creatively on a piece of paper or a cardboard.
4. Display your mind map!
Lastly, find a perfect place to put this mind map. Chose a place, where you can see it every day, like the fridge, on your bathroom mirror, at the door. Put it anyplace where you’re sure to bump into it so that you never forget striving for those goals.
5. Take action everyday!
Everyday try to take action to achieve one or more of your goals. When you know you won’t be able to lose that weight without help, hire a personal trainer or see a nutritionist. Doing just one thing everyday will add up to taking a lot of action and eventually you will reach those goals!
Yes, to some, this might all sound silly. But how can you ever really achieve those New Year’s resolutions if you don’t have a clear vision of what they should look like? Just give it a try for 2008. It doesn’t take long! This week, just take an hour after work or when your children are in bed to sit down and think a bit about yourself and your life. You can use this for every field in your life, like family, relationships, health, spirituality, finances, job, etc. And if you don’t want to do it alone, make it a family activity during the next weekend where everyone in your family sits down and makes their own mind map or make one as a family. Be creative, dream big and have a bit of fun!
